Institute Director & Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and Epidemiology

Dr. Abdeen graduated in clinical biochemistry from Manchester University, UK and from Johns Hopkins University, USA in Public Health. Professor of community health in the faculty of medicine at both Al-Quds and Toronto Universities and ANAHRI’s director with over 25 years experience in academic teaching, research and administration in public institutions. Background includes university teaching, research, and extension/outreach. As a public health specialist , he has been involved with NGOs work for more than 15 years, he has a comprehensive knowledge and experience in health and development projects, leading strategic planning sessions, designing implementation plans, monitoring and evaluation of projects’ progress and impact including assuming role in the management and technical projects at local and international levels.

His principal research interests are in the social, psychological and behavioral determinants of mental and physical health and well-being and on the development of risk behavior patterns among school children pertaining to nutrition, eating habits and physical activity. He has been nominated as International Educator of the Year for 2006. He has conducted 17 national surveys on behalf of the Palestinian Ministry of Health and has published many reports, articles, monographs and chapters in books, and is on the editorial board of two journals on Nutrition and Health. He has chaired national committees for food fortification and food insecurity Task Force, and is an advisor to the Palestinian Ministry of Health on nutrition monitoring. He has served as a consultant for the WHO and FAO in Public Health (2003 and 2004). He was the Dean of Research and Graduate Studies (1995 -2001).
